WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
We are excited to welcome back all returning families for another great year. We extend a special welcome to all our new staff members, students, and their families! SECO (Sato Elementary Community Organization) is the non-profit parent volunteer organization for Sato Elementary School. Our organization’s goal is to help enhance student’s learning experience by fostering a community among parents, teachers, and staff. SECO does this by providing the planning, volunteers, funds, and/or support for many events, programs and activities at Sato.
We thank you for your support and invite you to visit our website to learn more about our organization and how you can help.
FIRST SECO MEETING OF THE YEAR
Our first general SECO meeting of the year is on Wednesday, September 18 at 6:00 pm in the school library. Parents are invited to join and participate.
NEW WEBSITE
SECO is excited to announce that our new website is now live! The site has new features including an events calendar, easy access to sponsorships for Popcorn Fridays, as well as current volunteer opportunities. The site will also include event information, ticket sales, information about SECO, and spirit wear. Be sure to visit our new site at www.satocommunity.org.
SECO IS NOW ON WHATSAPP!
SECO utilizes multiple platforms to share information with families including ParentSquare, Facebook and now WhatsApp! Join the “*OFFICIAL* SECO (Sato Elementary Community Organization)” group for news, volunteer needs, and event information.
RACCOON RUN
The registration for the Fall 2024 Raccoon Run is now open! This year’s run will be Thursday, October 10! As SECO’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Raccoon Run historically brings in roughly 60% of SECO’s yearly operating budget. A jog-a-thon style event, student joggers are encouraged to reach out to family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors for donations. Students have the opportunity to earn prizes as a class and individually. This year, the run will take place in the fall to take advantage of the milder weather as well as to better help SECO accurately apportion funds throughout the school year. Look for more information to come in the next week!
VOLUNTEERING IN THE SCHOOL
If you are interested in volunteering in the school this year (in the classroom, library, as a field trip chaperone, events, or during Popcorn Friday lunches) then you must pass a new Beaverton School District background check. Please note, the district has established a new background check protocol that requires all volunteers to apply - even if you have previously been approved to volunteered in the school.
To apply, please click here.
There is a backlog to approve applications, so we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. Please visit our website for volunteer information, current needs and how to sign up to help.
SATO SPIRIT WEAR
Families are invited to purchase Sato spirit wear from our website! This season’s offerings include youth shirts and sweatshirts, beanies, and water bottles.
Unless otherwise requested, orders placed online will be sent home with your student. Spirit wear will also be available for purchase during Back to School Night.
FRED MEYER REWARDS
You can help SECO earn when you shop at Fred Meyer! The Fred Meyer Community Rewards program makes donations to local organizations, like SECO, based on qualifying purchases made at Fred Meyer. Once you link your rewards card online, present your Shopper’s Reward Card (or provide your alternate ID) at the register during checkout and your purchase will be applied to the program at no added cost to you! You can find detailed instructions on how to sign up on our website.
MOVIE NIGHT - SAVE THE DATE!
Our first movie night of the year on Friday, September 27. Bring the family and some comfy seating and join us for an indoor screening of Migration. Look for ticket sale information to come!
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Be sure to stop by the SECO booth at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 5. We’ll be selling spirit wear, answering questions, and helping families register for the raccoon run. Students that have registered for the Raccoon Run (on-site or from home) can spin our prize wheel for a fun treat!
We've invited Kona Ice to join us for the evening. Be sure to stop by their truck to purchase some delicious shaved ice!
POPCORN FRIDAY
Our first Popcorn Friday of the year is Friday, September 27. We're excited to start up another year of our Popcorn Friday program! In combination with school assemblies and Spirit Days, Popcorn Fridays are the perfect way to end the week.
On Popcorn Fridays, SECO sells bags of popcorn to students during their lunch period. For $25.00, parents can sponsor a class for the month which ensures each student gets a bag of popcorn! Read the full details on this much loved program here.
Please visit our SECO store to sponsor your student's class.
You can sign up to volunteer for one of the slots in SignUp Genius here. This opportunity is only available to those who have passed their background check and have received confirmation from the Raptor System.
DINE OUT !
Join other Sato families and support SECO by eating out! Join us on Sunday, September 15 at Bethany Public House (4840 NW Bethany Blvd, Portland 97229) between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM (dine-in only, no happy hour), show your server the flyer below, and 15% of your bill will be donated to SECO! The funds from Dine Out Nights help pay for programs and events we host for Sato students and their families! We encourage you to share the Dine Out flyers with your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors! Visit our website for more information about our Dine Out Night program.
ART LIT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Our first Art Literacy project will be in September and we are looking for classroom volunteers! You don't need to be an artist or have a background in art to volunteer as all volunteers will receive training (our first training is scheduled on Sep 11 - 7 pm @Sato Cafeteria) . If you are interested in helping, please email our Art Lit Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Kulak at rachel.kulak@gmail.com. Visit our website for more information about the Art Literacy program.
OBOB CO-CHAIR NEEDED
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program. Starting in 3rd grade, students, read or listen to books from a list of 16 titles and battle in teams of 4-5 by answering questions about the books. Students at all reading levels are encouraged to participate.
Mrs. Fry is looking for a co-chair to help her coordinate this volunteer run program. OBOB can not happen if we do not get a co-chair! Responsibilities include: helping to recruit and schedule volunteers, helps volunteers find substitutes when they are unable to keep their volunteer commitments. If you are interested, please email Tammy Fry at Tammy_Fry@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Additional OBOB volunteer needs will be released in November.
